Sometimes the strongest people are the ones quietly carrying the most.

When you are being impacted by someone's alcohol and/or other drug use, looking after your own wellbeing isn't giving up on them. It's giving yourself the strength to keep going. You deserve support, understanding and someone to listen just as much as the person you're worried about.

Because you matter too.

You can love someone deeply and still be exhausted. It doesn't mean you've stopped caring. Burnout isn't the absence of love - it's what happens when you've been carrying stress for too long without enough support. If you're feeling emotionally numb, becoming impatient, are constantly tired, having difficulty concentrating, or feel like you have nothing left to give, it's a signal that you need care too.

You're not responsible for their choices

You may be experiencing a kind of grief. You grieve the person they used to be. You grieve the plans you once had together. Birthdays that feel different. Family traditions that have changed. The future you imagined.

This type of grief can feel confusing. It's not the 'typical' grief we experience after a death - there's no ending or finality to this situation and there can be wildly conflicting emotions. It's chronic sorrow. And like any grief, it deserves understanding and support.

You can't make someone reduce or stop their substance use. But you can look after you. If you've been thinking about asking for help, whenever you're ready, we'll be here.

Support wherever you live

Our support is delivered over Zoom (video) or over the phone, so you can access it no matter where you live in Aotearoa New Zealand. No travel, completely confidential and private, and at times that work for you.
